A new species of Serrapinnus Malabarba, 1998 (Characidae: Cheirodontinae) from Rio Grande do Norte State, northeastern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Jerep,Fernando C.; Malabarba,Luiz R..
Serrapinnus potiguar, new species, is described from the rio Ceará-Mirim, a coastal drainage in the Rio Grande do Norte State, northeastern Brazil. The new species is distinguished from the other species of the genus by the shape and arrangement of the ventral procurrent caudal-fin rays of the sexually dimorphic males; where the hypertrophied elements present the shape of a series of scimitars arranged radially, forming a semi-circle on the ventral margin of the caudal peduncle. Furthermore, the new species is diagnosed from S. heterodonand S. piaba, sympatric congeners from the northeastern Brazilian drainages, respectively by the presence of incomplete lateral line and teeth bearing at most five cusps.

Accuracy of Palate Shape as sex Indicator in Human Skull with Maxillary Teeth Loss International Journal of Morphology
Suazo Galdames,Iván Claudio; Zavando Matamala,Daniela Alejandra; Smith,Ricardo Luiz.
In forensic medicine, diagnosis of sex is the first step in the identification of human skulls. A first approximation is carried out via the qualitative analysis of a series of morphological indicators of sexual dimorphism. Classical studies (Krogman & Iscan, 1986) described 14 indicators for the diagnosis of sex with an accuracy of 90%, and one of these indicators is the shape of the palate. This study analyzed the effect of the loss of teeth on the accuracy of the diagnosis of sex in Brazilians adult skulls, using the shape of the palate as an indicator. We used 98 skulls of adult Brazilians, comprising 35 females and 63 males with an average age of 39.3 years (SD 7.8). The skulls were classified into two groups, namely the fully edentulous...

Age and Sex-Related Geometrical Variation of Ramus mandibulae of Sus scrofa's (Mammalia: Artiodactyla) Jaws International Journal of Morphology
Hohl,Leandro dos S. L; Sicuro,Fernando L; Azorit,Concepción; Carrasco,Rafael; Rocha-Barbosa,Oscar.
Morphological variation of the ramus mandibulae of wild Sus scrofa was described and correlated to sex and age differences. Young forms (n=27, 15 males, 12 females) and adults (n=23, 13 males, 10 females) were analyzed through Geometric Morphometrics (2-D) to assess differences between groups. We found significant differences between age- and sex-related shape variations at ramus mandibulae level. Young wild boars present bulky angular process with backward oriented coronoid process, while adults show slender jaw vertical ramus, and orthogonally oriented coronoid process. The ramus mandibulae in female wild boars is more robust and bulky than in males. The morphological changes between young and adult forms are related to alterations in the osteo-muscular...

Evaluating Accuracy and Precisión in Morphologic Traits for Sexual Dimorphism in Malnutrition Human Skull: a Comparative Study International Journal of Morphology
Suazo Galdames,Iván Claudio; Zavando Matamala,Daniela Alejandra; Smith,Ricardo Luiz.
One of the most important purposes of anthropological studies of human skeletons protocol is the determination of sex. Some skulls may be wrongly classified due to systemic conditions presented during the life of individuáis who affected the muscle forces that act on bones, as is the case of severe malnutrition. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of severe malnutrition on morphological determinan ts of sexual dimorphism classically studied in the visual analysis of the skull. 163 human skulls were analized with sex, age and cause of death known, belonging to the collection of Universidad Federal de Sao Paulo (UNIFESP). We performed visual inspection of the skull and diagnosis of sex based on size and overall architecture of the skull, an...

Ontogenetic and sexual variation in cranial characters of Aegialomys Xanthaeolus (Thomas, 1894)(Cricetidae: Sigmodontinae) from Ecuador and Peru Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Prado,Joyce R.; Percequillo,Alexandre R..
Aegialomys xanthaeolus (Cricetidae: Sigmodontinae) inhabits the arid montane areas of western Ecuador and Peru, and higher elevations in the upper Marañón valley in northern Peru. Some researchers have included this species in broader systematic assessments over the years, but there are no comprehensive studies focusing on intraspecific variation. There are several sources of intraspecific phenotypic variation, including sexual dimorphism and age. These sources may confound the assessment of similarity/dissimilarity among populations, therefore it is essential that non-geographic variation is evaluated before studies on geographical variation and species delimitation are carried out. Here we summarize existing information regarding the geographical...

Sex Determination in Mandibles in the First Year of Life by a Quantitative Approach International Journal of Morphology
Suazo Galdames,Iván Claudio; Zavando Matamala,Daniela Alejandra; Smith,Ricardo Luiz.
Numerous studies have shown that skeletal characteristics vary among different populations. Several authors suggest that it is possible to determine sex through the anatomical evaluation of children mandible, however there are few morphometrical studies conducted with such specimens. The purpose of this study was to analyze several mandibular dimensions and identify the ones that could be useful to perform sex differentiation in a sample of Brazilian young children. For this study we used 32 children dry mandibles of known sex, age ranging from 0 to 1 year old. The mandibles pertain to the collection of the Skull Museum of the Universidade Federal de Sao Paulo (UNIFESP). The parameters included bicondilar width, bigonial width, minimum width and height of...

Sexual Dimorphism in Permanent Maxillary Central Incisor in Kosovo: Albanian Population International Journal of Morphology
Staka,Gloria; Asllani-Hoxha,Flurije; Bimbashi,Venera.
The aim of this study was to investigate the sexual dimorphism in permanent maxillary central incisor in Kosovo Albanian population using crown linear diameters, crown module (CM) and crown index (CI). The study sample consisted of 204 dental students, selected from the Dental School, Faculty of Medicine at University of Prishtina, Republic of Kosovo. The measurements of mesiodistal (MD) and buccolingual (BL) crown diameters of left and right permanent maxillary incisor (MCI) were taken in a dental casts using electronic digital caliper Boss, Hamburg Germany, with accuracy± 0.01 mm. The descriptive statistics, t-test and percentage of sexual dimorphism in crown linear diameters and dental indexes of maxillary central incisor were calculated. The results...

Sexual Dimorphism in the Foramen Magnum Dimensions International Journal of Morphology
Suazo Galdames,Iván Claudio; Perez Russo,Priscilla; Zavando Matamala,Daniela Alejandra; Smith,Ricardo Luiz.
The purpose of this study is to assess the presence of sexual dimorphism in the foramen magnum size. We analyzed 211 human skulls from the collection of the Universidade Federal de Sao Paulo, with a record of sex and age determined using anteroposterior and transverse diameters of foramen magnum, and their differences by gender (p<0.05) were ascertained. Fischer linear discriminant function was calculated and the value for the classification of these variables was determined. All the dimensions were found to be higher, and in men's skulls, the foramen magnum size had low discriminating power and were accurately classified only in 66.5% skulls. Our results show that this quantitative indicator is of limited practical value and should be supplemented with...
